Temperature and pressure dependence of quercetin-3-O-palmitate interaction with a model phospholipid membrane: film balance and scanning probe micros…
2004
The molecular interaction of quercetin-3-O-palmitate (QP) with dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) has been studied. Film balance measurements of the average molecular area vs QP molar fraction in DMPC/QP mixed monolayers showed that relevant positive deviations from ideality, i.e., a less dense monolayer packing, occurred for a temperature of 10 degrees C, below the critical melting transition temperature of DMPC monolayers T c m approximately equal 20 degrees C), while ideal behavior was observed at 37 degrees C, above this phase transition temperature. The positive deviation observed at low temperatures in the average molecular area increased with the surface pressure. Scanning probe m…
Monte Carlo calculation of free energy for a fcc lattice-gas model
1990
A face-centered-cubic Ising lattice-gas model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions is studied, and an accurate determination of the transition temperature for the discontinuous order-disorder transition is obtained. This model is of interest in the studies of phase diagrams for metallic alloys. The location of the transition was previously not known accurately, and its estimation has a number of applications. Very accurate absolute free-energy densities for the two coexisting phases have been obtained from a combination of the standard thermodynamic integration method and the method of sampling finite-size dependence. The latent-heat also is calculated with good precision.
Prevalence and genotypes of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato infection in Ixodes ricinus ticks in southern Norway.
2010
From April to October 2007, host-seeking Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected from 4 locations in southern Norway: Farsund, Mandal, Sogne and Tromoy. Two hundred and ten larvae, 1130 nymphs and 449 adults were investigated for infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the 16S rRNA gene. The total percentage of B. burgdorferi s.l. in nymphal and adult ticks was determined to be 31.3% in Farsund, 25.2% in Mandal, 22.3% in Sogne and 22.1% in Tromoy. Larvae were pooled in groups of 10 before analysis, and Borrelia infection was detected in 1 of the 21 larvae pools. B. burgdorferi s.l. were genotyped by melting curve analys…
Gelation behavior of 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, an antituberculosis agent, in aqueous alcohol solutions
2012
It was shown that 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, an antituberculosis agent, gels aqueous alcohol solutions efficiently. Thermal stability and gel-to-sol transition temperature of 1% gel in CD3OD/D2O (2:1) was studied by 1H-NMR. Fibrous structures of four xerogels have been characterized by scanning electron microscope. peerReviewed
Changes in emotions and personal goals in primiparous pregnant women during group intervention for fear of childbirth
2018
The changes in emotions, subjective fear of childbirth, and personal goals were examined during a group intervention to treat fear of childbirth (FOC). The objective was to gain a more detailed understanding of the changes occurring during the group intervention of FOC. The changes in emotions, subjective FOC, and personal goals were studied in primiparous pregnant women with severe FOC participating in a group intervention (n = 105). The group intervention contained six sessions during pregnancy and one after childbirth. At every session, the participants filled in a questionnaire regarding their experiences of current positive and negative emotions and the subjective FOC. The participants…
Redox signaling (cross-talk) from and to mitochondria involves mitochondrial pores and reactive oxygen species
2010
This review highlights the important role of redox signaling between mitochondria and NADPH oxidases. Besides the definition and general importance of redox signaling, the cross-talk between mitochondrial and Nox-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) is discussed on the basis of 4 different examples. In the first model, angiotensin-II is discussed as a trigger for NADPH oxidase activation with subsequent ROS-dependent opening of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channels leading to depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential followed by mitochondrial ROS formation and respiratory dysfunction. This concept was supported by observations that ethidium bromide-induced mitochondrial d…
Nitroglycerine causes mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production: In vitro mechanistic insights
2007
Background Nitroglycerine (GTN) is an organic nitrate that has been used for more than 100 years. Despite its widespread clinical use, several aspects of the pharmacology of GTN remain elusive. In a recent study, the authors of the present study showed that GTN causes opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) and mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Objective In the present study, it was tested whether GTN-induced ROS production depends on mitochondrial potassium ATP-dependent channel or mPTP opening, and/or GTN biotransformation. Methods and results Isolated rat heart mitochondria were incubated with succinate (a substrate for complex II) and GT…
Pressure effects on the vibrational properties of alpha-Bi2O3: an experimental and theoretical study
2014
We report an experimental and theoretical high-pressure study of the vibrational properties of synthetic monoclinic bismuth oxide (alpha-Bi2O3), also known as mineral bismite. The comparison of Raman scattering measurements and theoretical lattice-dynamics ab initio calculations is key to understanding the complex vibrational properties of bismite. On one hand, calculations help in the symmetry assignment of phonons and to discover the phonon interactions taking place in this low-symmetry compound, which shows considerable phonon anticrossings; and, on the other hand, measurements help to validate the accuracy of first-principles calculations relating to this compound. We have also studied …
Identifying three-way DNA junction-specific small-molecules
2012
Three-way junction DNA (TWJ-DNA, also known as 3WJ-DNA) is an alternative secondary DNA structure comprised of three duplex-DNAs that converge towards a single point, termed the branch point. This point is characterized by unique geometrical properties that make its specific targeting by synthetic small-molecules possible. Such a targeting has already been demonstrated in the solid state but not thoroughly biophysically investigated in solution. Herein, a set of simple biophysical assays has been developed to identify TWJ-specific small-molecule ligands; these assays, inspired by the considerable body of work that has been reported to characterize the interactions between small-molecules an…
